I think he was just making a generalization in which there is a reverse correlation between the KISS principle and the amount of settings you have. And I do tend to agree with that generalization.
I think that if the paperclip stays, you might as well add it to the "Thread subscriptions" page.
I use the paperclip alot to know if any attachments are in the thread and how many. I don't think it should suffer the same fate as Microsoft Clippit.
