Hey,
Ive been looking around at alot of people's sig and noticing that they made good use of the mybb portal and alot of them look amazing...

Im thinking of making a new site using the portal i just have a couple of questions. I would appreciate a few answers or links to the answers that ive over looked...

1. is the portal really as great as it seems?

2. can anyone give me a link to there portal so i can look at them

3. Is it easy to set the portal as the home page

4. Is it possible to add links to the navigation at the top.

5. And affiliate links?

6. tell me anything else i should know and your experience using mybb portal

thanks Big Grin
1. Well, what does it seem to you? It's just fine for me, though a new theme to go along with it couldn't hurt.
2. http://mercx.exofire.net/index.php
3. You can do it using the .htaccess file, but that's not really having it as the home page. I made a few minor code modifications to make it my home page.
4. Yes, very easy to do in the templates. See my site.
5. Yes, very easy to do in the templates (there are also plugins for this).
6. It works fine as a home page for me. I am looking for a new site-wide theme I can use for it, but it includes most of the functionality I would need. Adding new blocks via the template editor is easy.
Thanks lol

funny your site was the first i looked at and caught my eye. its really great.

But are there no themes for the portal itself? would my existing forum theme match the portal or would the portal have the default theme?

And thanks for the info that really helped on to creating my site Wink
Whatever theme your forum is using will apply to all pages including the portal, unless it is missing important templates.
ok...

also my forum is located on a directory ex. /forum

what do i do to make the portal my home page so when people type in my url they get the forum portal?

if you can provide steps ill appreciate it.

also if i make the portal my home page... will the mods i install in the forums show up on the portal like there suppose to like google ads and affiliates links or do i have to install them before i make the portal my home page?

thanks! Big Grin
You can either do something like this:
1) Rename index.php to forums.php
2) Rename portal.php to index.php
3) Add a link in your header template to link to forums.php

Or install my Portal Redirect plugin to redirect users once each day to the portal when they first visit (search it on MyBB Mods: http://mods.mybboard.net).

It depends on the modification. Some may not affect the portal, others will. The portal is activated by default even if you don't use it (for example, http://dennistt.net/forum/portal.php or http://community.mybboard.net/portal.php), so I don't think it really matters whether you activate it before or after.
thanks that worked Smile

i got more questions Big Grin

is it possible to just copy and move /forum to my main directory or do i have to reinstall mybb to do that? will it mess up the database if i move it to another location?

also what file do i edit and where to add links to the forums.php and to other programs on my website?

thanks
Change the Board URL and cookie settings to suit your new URL. Then just copy all the folders and files inside your "Forum" folder, and move it up one level using FTP or your File manager on your hosting control panel.

You can add links in your header template.
