Proposal: Building a Feature‑Rich Portal for MyBB

I am considering building a portal type application for MyBB, which could act as a front end site.

My plan is to use inspiration from other things such as TinyPortal, and a CMS I used back in the day called Subdreamer. I haven't been around MyBB for years now, but I would like to open the floor to other users that may be interested. This will be free, but I do think I would try to help cover my time with the possibility to purchase something like copyright removal.

Articles will be a feature
Page creation
Control of templates and designs
Based on MyBB as a core platform
Widget control
Menu building
Permission system
Friendly URLs, etc

This will be something I build for a project I have in mind, but as I say I do hope it would become popular with active MyBB users as this would double up the purpose behind making it.

PHP 8.1 reached its End-of-Life

Released in back in 2021 November, PHP 8.1 introduced a lot of useful features, and reached its End-of-life this past December 31, 2025.

PHP 8.2 will will reach its End-of-life at the end of 2026. Although it hasn't be discussed internally, the likelyhood of MyBB 1.9 upgrading its minimum requirement from version 8.2 to 8.3 is higher each day.

ive switched my mybb domain website to cloudflare.

the mybb system works perfect without me doing a thing..

but my email doesn't work.
what do you think that i need to fix in order to make my domain email work again?

if there are any special settings on clodflare that you recommend using or not using i would glad to know.. because i'm not familiar with most of the stuff there..

Kind of a chicken or egg question I know, lol but I wanted to ask, which should you install first? Why?

Which should you install first if you are starting a new forum from scratch, or restoring from a back up with no themes or plugins installed?

I didn't see a topic like this around here, (in case I missed something, I apologize to the mods..) but I wanted to ask this for a while..

What made you choose MyBB software?

For me personally, I was on free hosting for years, (2004-2014) and after using a metric sh-t ton of software over the years, I decided that I wanted to be on IPB..

However, financial issues (then, as a broke college student lol..) and exorbitant license costs kept me on free ipb hosting. After being disappointed with ZB, as impressive as it was, but I just didn't like the changes, and still preferred IPB software.. so I left IF (R.I.P.) and joined Jcink Hosting where I was happy with the host, especially in comparison to IF because it was everything I hoped IF would be after their upgrade, but better.. and so, I stayed there until about 2014 when I moved here.

After being on JFB for years, I was still team IPB and was FINALLY in a financial position to move to paid IPB and get a lifetime license. And then the changes to the IPB software and licensing prices happened, and I was still willing to work with it, but then, they changed so much that I became unsure about it, and eventually, it became an issue of, the more they changed, the more I hated it, and then they changed their licensing and discontinued selling the lifetime license but still had support for it. I had a feeling in my gut, that this too would be changed, but it was a matter of when, and that was one of the reasons why I was still unsure. With the increasing price changes, it felt more and more like I'd be paying more and getting less in return.

At any rate, a friend of mine who is also a forum owner, had just moved to XF after he was on IPB with his lifetime license, and he offered to sell me his as he wouldn't need it anymore. He offered to let me test drive his ACP to see if I still wanted to move to IPB and it was after that, that I had decided that I no longer wanted to go with IPB and I wasn't keen on XF yet either. Shortly after I made that decision, I would end up with another opportunity to test drive an ACP, this time, on a paid hosted MyBB later on.

So, another friend of mine, and co-admin and a forum owner himself, had just moved his forum off of JFB and on to MyBB, and he too, let me test drive his paid hosted forum to get a feel for what I'd be dealing with if/when I hosted my own.

He had been suggesting MyBB when I discussed the idea of moving to new software with my members and staff, and I had tried a bunch of the free hosted MyBB services, and I then tried it on X10's free hosting account previously to get experience with hosting my own forum, so when my co-admin let me test drive his hosted forum, that pretty much solidified my decision to go with MyBB.. shortly after I made that decision, I would learn that IPB had discontinued support for lifetime licenses, which confirmed my gut feeling.

And now, I am here, and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

So, what made you choose MyBB? How are you liking it so far?

Best Unmanaged VPS Options

I've been hosting a couple personal sites on A2Hosting for the last year, previous to that I've tried a few different shared hosts on top of using a friends personal server for some things here and there (though that server has serious limitations especially with email and other things).

With A2 I'm on the shared plan "Turbo Boost Web Hosting" and after a year received the max sql connections error. Out of curiosity I contacted A2 to ask about their max connections limit and it turns out to be 75 on their shared hosting plans.

So then I asked about their managed/unmanaged VPS plans and those max connections which are only 100-150 (that's the only range of options you get).

I'm looking for more self managed/control. I thought with a VPS you got to control all the aspects but I suppose that is wrong. I did take a look through Web Hosting Discussion 2.0 but the latest post was on 12/01/21, looking for more current recommendations.

They've only hit the front page so far. Several times from two different IP ranges. Sucking up all the .css, .js, and .png theme files.
