I’ve noticed that quite a few MyBB extends haven’t been updated in a while to match newer PHP versions or even newer MyBB versions and changes, which is understandable since many authors have likely moved on or are busy with other things.

I’m curious about what the correct approach would be if someone wanted to update or extend one of these older extensions. For example:
  • Is it acceptable to release an updated version (and possibly with a new name) that reflects its updated functions or design, as long as proper credit is given to the original author?
  • Should we try to contact the original author first, or just clearly state in the description that it’s a continuation or fork?
  • Are there any official guidelines or best practices for this within the MyBB community?

I just don’t want to create extends that basically do the same things under a different name, so I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts and experiences, especially from developers who’ve done this before if any.

I noticed the visual change that was made a few days ago. The way category titles and the forum/topic/author links under them are now colored differently for each category is something I really liked.

For quite some time, even though there have been background improvements, the forum itself felt a bit static and monotonous on the surface. This small touch has broken that monotony and given the forum a more lively and colorful atmosphere.

Thanks to everyone involved — I think this is a very nice improvement. 👌]]>

Given the lack of public follow-up on this by staff more than a month later, I am taking the initiative myself.

Proposed changes

Two changes are proposed to the Code of Conduct.

The first inserts a new entry into the list under "Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:". This is that proposed new entry:
  • Apologism for unethical behaviour such as unrestrained paedophilia, or distribution in a sexualised context of images of children (these examples compelling exclusion from the community)
The second is to append to the first sentence under "Scope" which currently reads:

"This Code of Conduct applies both within project spaces and in public spaces when an individual is representing the project or its community."

After the change is appended, it would read:

"This Code of Conduct applies both within project spaces and in public spaces when an individual is representing the project or its community, as well as within independently-run boards whose administrators are seeking support from, or (continuing) membership of, the project's community."

Rationale

Combined, had these changes been in effect for the situation that motivate them, the admin of the board for paedophiles on which images of children were distributed in a sexualised context would have been summarily banned from our community.

The first change makes it clear that:
  1. Unacceptable behaviour includes not just unethical behaviour, but also apologism for unethical behaviour.
  2. Unethical behaviour for which apologism for is unacceptable includes unrestrained paedophilia.
  3. Merely having the proclivities of a paedophile is not in itself unethical behaviour; it is the failure to restrain those proclivities that constitutes unethical behaviour (this is to satisfy staff concerns about human rights).
  4. Distributing images of children in a sexualised context constitutes such unrestrained paedophilia, noting that:
  5. The images themselves don't need to be sexual in nature; it is the sexualised context that matters, e.g., their being posted on a board for the gratification of paedophiles.

Both confirmed a forced logout which required me to go through the very tedious hcaptcha process four times (and it is rarely a single hcaptcha step) which includes

1. verification to login using a known and browser-saved password which is rejected for being too simple,
2. verification of email to reset the password,
3. verification to complete the reset process, then
4. verification to log in with the new password.

It's enough to confirm that I am a human angry enough to say "be done with the nonsense or I'll be done." The irony of all the captcha systems is that input is used to train AI to recognize patterns in images. "Prove you're not a bot. Indeed!" Angry
