Web Hosting Discussion
Recently the MyBB General Discussion forum has seen a large increase in threads asking for web host recommendations. In an attempt to consolidate all these threads (which always get the same response) into a single thread I have created this thread.

First, I would like to remind users that if you are looking for a webhost, specialist forums like Web Hosting Talk are usually much better places to ask as the people there have far more experience in this field; however if you prefer to, check out the list here too.

If you would like a webhost added to the list, PM it to Imad Jomaa (with the subject "webhost") and he will add it along with the name of the user who suggested it. Likewise, if you find any dead links here, let him know and he'll remove them. DO NOT PM any other staff, they will likely kill you. Be sure to read the quoted guideline(s) below if you're suggesting your own host.

Quote:If you have at-least 1,000 active users using your hosting service and a minimum of 10 testimonials with active sites and available links to them, then you may request to have it added.

Finally, the MyBB Group in no way endorses these hosts or implies that they are MyBB compatible. This is simply a list of hosts suggested, and used by, our members.

FREE HOSTS
  • Freehostia - Recommended by nathangrubb
Comments: "A free host, with no artificial limitations like some free hosts. Just like a paid host, except the bandwidth, disk space, etc limits."
  • x10Hosting - Recommended by fedlerner
Comments: "x10hosting is the top 1 free hosting company. They offer Ad-Enhanced & Ad-Free plans. Their servers are really fast and reliable. They also have paid plans (on different servers) for members that think that their site has grown enough to move to a Paid hosting."
    NOTE: Please see [Wiki: Help:Contents#Host-specific_Problems]
  • Sv2 - Recommended by Holy Phoenix
Comments: "It is a free host, that offers stuff without posting. I believe they give more if you do post though."
  • vgchat hosting - Recommended by scylla
Comments: "A free host that gives users 300 megs of space & 10 gigs of bandwith, more than enough for an average forum, I've been with them for nearly a year now."
  • PhpZilla - Recommended by Proper
    Comments: "a good free host."

"POST TO HOST" HOSTS
  • MainVista - Recommended by NetSage
Comments: "You must make forum posts get hosting but its very reasonable. You only need 6 posts for the first plan and that one time not monthly. The staff and members are knowledgeable and helpful."
  • HelioHost - Recommended by Clair
Comments: "It's an old one I used to use, they have fairly simple plans."
  • Space Socket - Recommended by Rovin
Comments: "I host my site here and haven't had any downtime at all from them."
  • Trap17 - Recommended by Lachlan
Comments: "To get hosting, you need to get 30 credits to get a hosting package, then you need to post, quality posts and topics to get hosting credits. 1 hosting credit = 1 day of hosting, and the better quality a post is, the more credits you get."
  • Tyreus - Recommended by dalton
Comments: "Tyreus offers 3 different plans. Even their smallest plan they offer 5 Databases. On their biggest they allow 40! For only 15 posts a month.. (yes. 15.) you can have emails, subdomains, addon domains, and all that great stuff. And since the community has 250+ members it's really easy to get the monthly posts!"
  • Retect - Recommended by Scott.Bates
Comments: "Quality servers, fast support, 7 + years in the hosting and web development business!"

PAID HOSTS - SHARED
  • 1and1 - Recommended by DennisTT
Comments: "Affordable and reliable hosting plans for small and beginning sites."
  • SpeedySparrow - Recommended by GamerVoid
Comments: "Great pricing, features, and extraordinary support."
  • Ventraip - Recommended by ChrisR
Comments: "There plans are good value for money, really fast support. Plus they are an Austrlian host for the Aussie mybb members looking for a good host."
  • Openmind Hosting - Recommended by Footie
Comments: "Their prices are not the cheapest available, though they are very competitive - but the support you get is second to none."
  • Valcato Hosting - Recommended by flick
Comments: "They aren't the cheapest on the block, but I've been with them for about 4-5 years now, and the support is amazing. The uptime is excellent, and the staff really know what they're doing in terms of fixing problems/maintaining the server."
  • WireNine - Recommended by NetSage
Comments: "Support is amazingly fast and friendly too. Great speed all the features you will ever need. Also has a forum so you can talk with other people hosted by them. Servers have amazing uptime and speed."
  • AN Hosting - Recommended by 0_0Zee0_0
Comments: "They provide 500 GB of disk space & 5 TB Bandwidth, they also register the domain for life."
  • Host Department - Recommended by 0_0Zee0_0

  • HostGator - Recommended by nathangrubb and MrDoom
Comments: "Excellent for the price. Will soon be upgrading all their servers to MySQL 5.x and PHP 5.x."
  • HostNine - Recommended by rcpalace

  • YRHost - Recommended by youssef93
Comments: "I haven't personally used this webhost but it was recommended by an administrator who has a forum with over 40,000 members and over 30,000 threads. I was amazed how the forum was running perfectly like this. YRHost has a bunch of Windows and Linux based plans which will probably suit any budget. The prices are very, very reasonable actually."
  • PowWeb - Recommended by TomL
    Comments: <None Given>
  • Crazy Domains - Recommended by _Tim
Comments: "I use these hosts for all my Australian clients as i have found them to be the best value Australian host and i know we have a lot of Australian members. Their support is pretty good and their up time is excellent. Their data centers are in Perth."
  • HawkHost - Recommended by DarkRaven
Comments: "I've been with them for almost a year now and I can't remember once being down. They have amazing support as well, live chat, e-mail, and phone. All my e-mails get responses within ten minutes. Really, this host cares about it's customers. I could not recommend more."
  • Web Faction - Recommended by Alex Smith
Comments/Review: "I went with Web Faction because I wanted something more than your run of the mill shared hosting. They have found an interesting set up which is like a hybrid between shared and VPS. You get a dedicated amount of ram for your programs, but things like Apache and PHP don't account towards that (you can buy more ram or upgrade to a dedicated as well). You get full SSH access(well in your directory but it's enough to install what you need) although they already support most languages included Ruby, PHP, Perl, Java, and Python."

PAID HOSTS - VPS
  • Linode - Recommended by MiNT and DennisTT
Comments: "Completely unmanaged hosting service where just about everything is automated down to installation of your choice of distro. This is ace when you want to get up and running quickly but its not so cool when something goes wrong unless you are tech savvy."
  • CompleteVPS - Recommended by DanEthical
    Comments: <None Given>
  • YRHost - Recommended by youssef93
Comments: "I haven't personally used this webhost but it was recommended by an administrator who has a forum with over 40,000 members and over 30,000 threads. I was amazed how the forum was running perfectly like this. YRHost has a bunch of Windows and Linux based plans which will probably suit any budget. The prices are very, very reasonable actually."
  • ShockingHost - Recommended by Morsec0de
Comments: "Great hosting, I can vouch for the VPS service, it works very well."

PAID HOSTS - DEDICATED
  • Valcato Hosting - Recommended by flick
Comments: "They aren't the cheapest on the block, but I've been with them for about 4-5 years now, and the support is amazing. The uptime is excellent, and the staff really know what they're doing in terms of fixing problems/maintaining the server."
  • WireNine - Recommended by NetSage
Comments: "Support is amazingly fast and friendly too. Great speed all the features you will ever need. Also has a forum so you can talk with other people hosted by them. Servers have amazing uptime and speed."
  • CrystalTech - Recommended by redbear81
Comments: "It is a paid, semi-dedicated server to dedicated server hosting. I have been using it from a few years, and I think others can benefit from using it as a host too."
  • MediaTemple (mt) - Recommended by Imad Jomaa
Comments: "Definitely one of the few hosting companies I would recommend. If you're looking for quality and uptime with the flexibility of building your server from the ground up, they might just be the one you were looking for."
  • eSecureData - Recommended by Booher
Comments: "Very reliable server provider, and very affordable! Has always provided support in a very timely, and professional manner"

RE: I need a webhost!
Since MrD. cannot modify this list anymore. Please send me a PM with your additions according to the sending rules listed above.
Just a quick update. If I haven't posted the host you PM'ed me and neither responded to your PM, it's the cause of me opening it, not having time to add the host, and forgetting to add it at a later date.

Furthermore, if you are one affected of such causation, please resend me the PM, and I'll get to it asap. Smile

Thank you for your continued cooperation and contribution. Smile
Faviouz has suggested that we should include MyBB hosts here as well. If you know of a MyBB host or own one yourself and you meet the hosting guidelines (mentioned in first post), feel free to PM me. If we get enough submissions, I'll add the category. Smile

Best Regards.

RE: I need a webhost!
Hello,

Due to a recent increase in web hosting related discussions, we have decided to open this thread in an effort to reduce the repetitive web hosting related threads. The first post of this thread will continue to hold the unofficial list of recommended hosts from the MyBB community. Suggesting web hosts for the list are as before, the submission details are written in the first post of this thread. Discussions in this thread should of course be related to web hosting and are certainly not limited to the hosts in the above list.

Please do not use this thread as a method to blatantly advertise your own web hosting services. If you would like to link to your own web hosting services, do so if it arises as a part of a discussion. Otherwise, you may submit it to the unofficial list by reading the guideline and submission details located in the first post.

Looking forward to reading your discussions. Smile

On behalf of the MyBB Team,
Imad Jomaa.

That makes it sound like I was in some kind of serious accident Confused

I stopped having enough time to contribute once I started my work placement (2008/2009) and that has pretty much continued ever since. I now have a job working as a programmer in the games industry.

I'm pretty active on twitter.

I think horizon-host offers good free hosting, a mate of mine uses it anyways.
