I am trying to upgrade to1.4 but I get,
Error
You do not have permissions to run this process.

I did
chmod -R 777 install/
chmod -R 777 forums/
chmod 666 inc/settings.php
chmod 666 uploads
chmod 666 uploads/avatars
chmod 666 cache
chmod 666 cache/themes

but no luck.

You have to be an administrator to run the upgrade process.

how can I login as administrator if I go to forums/admin/ I get
Error Type:
MyBB Error (40)
Error Message:
Your board has not yet been upgraded. Please do so before attempting to browse it.

Please create a "lock" file in your install directory. Logging into the ACP won't work. You need to log into the Front End as an administrator. Then you can run the upgrade script

Just create a new file in the install folder and call it lock.
