File Download Problem

I only allow xls and pdf uploads to the forum, but when downloading an excel file, it just displays random characters in the file, this is affecting all users.

And when downloading pdf files, many users receive the following error
[Image: error.jpg]

This is affecting about 70% of my forum users, and other have no problem.

The uploads folder is CHMOD 777.

Could anyone shed some light on this for me?
