Basically ive heard that when you upgrade all the images and things have to be re-uploaded to your webserver again.

Well i have lots of images that would need to be uploaded.

Also i dont want to risk breaking the site Sad

Can anybody help me ? or atleast explain the steps in detail?

that is a misconception OR rather incorrect !!

what about all the plugins? do they need to be re installed?

And what about the mysql databases?
^ which myBB version you have at present ?
1.6.3
Just upload the 1.6.4 files and run the upgrade script. No data will be lost unless you've made core edits.

Backup your files and database.
Download 1.6.4: http://www.mybb.com/download/latest
Upload the whole thing so it overwrites your current files.
Go to your site.com/install/upgrade.php
Choose 1.6.3 from the list of versions.
Run through the wizard.

Nothing will happen to your images unless you've replaced the default images that are in the ./images/ folder (you can probably get away with not uploading the images folder anyway) and nothing will happen to your plugins.
