How to do so users with less than 10 posts will need to get their posts/threads approved before it can be seen?

Very easily. Registered users (standard user group) are moderated, once they receive 10 posts, they are promoted to another group (one could even give that other group the same name if one wants to hide the fact from the users) which may freely post.

Yes, indeed it can.

I often recommend using group promotions for these things, but no-one seems to listen and they prefer a plugin that does things for them, which is kind of understandable if you think about it.

I can understand people would like a plugin as thesemay be easier to set up for some people but on the other hand why use a plugin for something that is default.
