My forum is currently private among my friends, I don't want random people to be able to find my forum. How can I make it so my forum is removed from search engines? I know how to do it on regular web pages but not mybb.

use robots.txt to disallow search engines ; that might help if SE crawlers obey the robots.txt instructions
you may also use htaccess for it ; lets wait for experts suggestions ...

is robots.txt already in my forum directories? or do I have to create it?
You have to create it. Put this in it and upload it to the root of your website:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
Google and Bing respect the robots.txt so I think that should be everything you need to do
