I see this as a plugin.

I think creating groups from ACP, giving moderator options to the team leader, and gibing the group a private forum will archive almost the same.

And it will give you more control about what groups you have.

Wait a few days for my next update to the Social Groups plugin. It is a big update. It's almost done.

At first, I was more on the side of the "MyBB needs this!" side of town, but as a few have pointed out, it is forum software...

Yes, Social Groups would be cool for community-building. However, I don't think this needs to be a core feature. It would be awesome if a Plugin Developer created something of the Social Groups sorts.

I saw that link to the "Social Groups" plugin, but it is invalid/broken...

The link is valid again. I had upgraded it so they needed to revalidate it.
