I've seen another version which I assume is free.

Have you tried searching the plugins area of the site?

Online Today is what you're looking for. It's an older plugin so you might need to update the compatibility declaration to 16*.

How do I do that. It says : This plugin is incompatible with MyBB 1604

On line 40 of /inc/plugins/onlinetoday.php, change "14*" to "16*".
