I am a member of two sites which exploded in members quite soon after they started. The first had lots of hardware give-aways for referring members, and other such gimmicks. The other got lots of members from the other after the original admin sold it to the admin of the second site and started a new site (which most didn't like).

That sounds like the same scenario Market Swag and ShadyForums was in.

Yeah and the second site is mostly overrun with RP lovers, which makes getting a tech-related or general chat thread answered tough!

The forum i run will be 2 years old at the end of September.
1.7+ million posts. Google PR3 and 35K alexa rank at the moment.
That's pretty fast, without advertising, without giveaways,etc. imho..
