OK, so I failed to grasp the installation process and just put it in the inc/plugins folder and activated it in the control panel, but Im not sure where to go from here

Try the plugin settings page.

Where exactly is that?

Try ACP > Configuration ( and here you will see the plugin with options)

I only have options to deactive there

Do you have the link to the plug-in Johnny? Is this a mod from mybb?

Usually when you install a plugin as Frank & Raoul indicated you need to go the Configuration then Settings, usually you will see some additional plugin options here on that listing. But, sometimes this isn't the case, if you have the link I can check the documentation for you.
