So if they wants plugin like this then it's up to them and if their members do not like it they just got to leave the forum.
We have no problems on our site to use such a plugin as our forum is run well and moderated well plus we have a good terms of service with excellent members but if there was a security issue then maybe i would even look at using a similar plugin for the safety of the site, to stop a member from having a un necessary ban for something he has not done but more so if a hacking attempt looked like happening. But after joint running a forum for almost 4 years we have not needed to look at or use any such plugin or intend to.
But at end of day its your site to do as you want to and run it as you want to. Nearly all forum software have similar plugins or even built into the software already plus in our case we are hosted and our domain is registered outside of the UK.
Even though i do not want to use such a plugin i do not condemn those that do.
But you break UK law .. as I work for the UK government I will pass on this problem to people above me .. it JUST BREAKS THE LAW in the UK. so therefore I have passed this issue to the correct UK government department

Will leave this for you to sort out as for our site we do not use any such plugin so dig out, sure the government got more issues to sort with the slashing of defence jobs and pensions just to name a few rather than trying to track down a few UK forums that maybe uses such a plugin to look at a personal message.
We are talking about the recent breaches of the data protection law in the Uk with the NOTW closing that refered to high profile phone tapping of major crimes not someone looking at a members PM on a forum that maybe the admin has already covered in their Terms of Service.
I find your enthusiasm on this subject keen to say the least but do not expect you to get much joy on this.
Ps: i also work for the UK government and i can imaging the response you will get on such a trivia matter
Sorry for going off topic as this is a support forum after all.

Perhaps not. this is a major coup for the job I do as it does breach the act ... as you work for the same firm as me perhaps we can talk via the recognised protocols and resolve this issue
JimR, you can't do anything about this. We both know that.
The administrator has the right to view PMs if they feel it is necessary. The administrator also has access to the users IP address, email address, and password. Private messages are nothing compared the the data administrators can freely see.
It's not just MyBB that has such plugins, many forum softwares have it.
The team at Facebook have the ability to read your Personal Messages. Are you going to sue them?
Really you have no ground to say you're going to report this to the Government. It's beyond stupidity imho.

This issue does not concern myself or our forum so i have no say in this issue.
As i did not start the thread and this is not my forum maybe you need to take this up with MyBB and the thread author.

I work for the UK government in areas that relate to data protection via the internet ... if you bothered to read the link a few pages ago you would understand the issue so I wont report it I'll just email my boss to the effect that the plugin mentioned does not comply with UK law
Fully agree with Malcolm you rearly are clutching at straws
If you work like you say IT based then you know what a trench you are digging for a start, sure it will give your boss something to smile about when he reads it (hope he is not having a buiscuit at the time) he might choke on it.
The support forums aren't really the place for this. Since the OP's question has already been answered, I'm closing this.
JimR, please post in the
Private Inquires forum if you wish to discuss this with the MyBB staff.
