Chances are that the old database that you downloaded wasn't downloaded correctly, causing you to form a corrupt database.

Did that already, it didn't work.
How did you merge the databases?
I imported it, then ran the merge script, then it showed an error, telling to upgrade, then I ran the install script to upgrade.

Did you save everything in that old database? Like all posts threads etc?
Are you running Google SEO by chance? If so try disabling it for first and report back. Because, I guess you're running Google SEO with incorrect config which is likely causing this issue.
Solved, looks like a table in the database was not imported.
