So what do you think is the best route to go? Using the RSS feed or using PHP to pull the data from the database? I've searched the forum for ideas but no luck so far and I feel I'm too tired to rely on my own thoughts.

When I've done this, I've always used RSS, it's just less of a hassle and already there.

That's what I was thinking but I had some issues with RSS in the past (it was the RSS to Post plugin for MyBB that didn't play nice for some reason). Any RSS feed display scripts/snippets you know of or recommend? I found some but they are mostly focused towards Twitter so the formatting and layout are not what I'm looking for.
