I'd like to display online users in other templates, such as in the header, but the online users variable is limited to the footer templates.

How can I display them?

Adding $boardstats in header will not work, you would need a plugin to add Online Users on header template. I had coded a custom plugin for a customer, if you wish you can buy a copy of that. PM me or post it here: http://yaldaram.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=58 if you wish.

Hmm, just tried, as Yaldaram said, it won't work, it'd require advance modifications or a plugin.
