MyBB being getting popular everyday, there are more spammers who are looking to explore the mybb forums to spam around. Especially the attack can be daunting for some new publishers at the beginning. I have worked many extended hours to find the solution for this. I am summerizing waht all will give you absolute relief from spamming

1) Java Script Bot protection in Registration
2) Simple Question Mod in registration
3) Add New field in the profile like how you came to know about us and enable biodata
4) Stop Forum Spam is mandatory module.

Once you have these installed, the next role is to prevent instant human spammer

5) Use minimum post for signature. Ensure that nobody can post a link or signature before something like 20 posts.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Keep track of your analytic data. You may see "inurl:profile powered by mybb" in your search list. keep track of that search term.

6. look for "bfbf" or "sdsff" kind of string in biodata and delete those accounts not ban

7. Most importantly make your forum a nofollow.

I hope these simple tips will make your life easy!
Why should we delete accounts with "bfbf" or "sdsff" instead of banning them?

And why the heck do we need to make our forums a nofollow? That's just weird...
I already have that you are forced to fill in bio, location and gender on registration.
It helps actually to stop bots

Yeah but there's StopForumSpam, which is awesome Smile
I would never delete accounts simply ban them. Also those accounts sometimes lead to traffic.
I have found that some accounts are book marked, they are simply bots, dont contribute. Once they are banned, another of them will search in the internet and would get yourself registered. If you delete them, you dont find any trace and are protected from second attack.

These are my observations. None of the techniques or a single menthod can give you full protection. So combination of them is great.

And dont count spammer's traffic. they are useless, they wont participate in forum, wont click any ads and simply will create that profile link and flee.

Its for new forums.
If you observe recent VBulletin forums, they get lesser spams simply because by default they are nofollow. MyBB attracts more because it is dofollow. Once your forum grows substantially, you can revert back. Mine is not a webmaster's forum so this helps a lot. But yes for those forums that relies on participation by other webmaster, making a new forum a nofollow will not attract traffic. I take it back. Smile

Interesting concept, but I am personally a bit critical of their claims that it cannot be defeated by a bot.
The matching images look like they have fairly high correlation, and, to me, it looks possible for a program to solve it.

trust me its awesome plugin, and anyone who have knowledge about mybb coding can contact Dave [email protected] and this guy give you beta plugin to test it on mybb
Just because you think it's awesome doesn't necessarily mean it's technically not solvable.
Just like registration questions - they may block spam now, until the bots have better question answering abilities...
