I just thought this might be nice, instead of opening the image in a new window. This would only take effect if the image wasn't in [URL] tags though

Something like lightbox

I think you don't understand what Tom said.
He doesn't talk about resizing images to fit the page. He says, when users click on a image (say attachment image), it will open in a lightbox instead of opening in a new window.

Somebody you all know and hate made a plugin for that, we use it on MineBoard.
I agree, this is definitely something that would be awesome in MyBB 2.0 and put us ahead of the other free software.

But yes, if the feature was smooth, then yes this would be a great addition.
