I would like to move my forum onto its own domain, right now its a sub domain of a different site I own. Anyway, I was talking to my host about purchasing a second domain to put it onto and they said it may not work after that? why would it do that? IF I upload the site files and restore the database to our old one wont it work alright? Or is there something else I would need to do? Thank you!

It will work fine. You'll just have to do a couple small tweaks. in inc/settings.php change the old domains to the new ones then change it in the adminCP.
