When someone tries to register they get:

Quote:MyBB has experienced an internal SQL error and cannot continue.

SQL Error:
2006 - MySQL server has gone away
Query:
SET NAMES 'utf8'

is this something to do with my host?

I am using mybb 1.6.4

This is a host problem. It means your SQL server is unavailable.
