Well I've uploaded everything correctly and all but when I go to CHMOD the uploads/avatars folder it reverts back to 0 even when I click ok. I'm using SmartFTP and below is a screenshot of what I see for both files, anyone able to help me ?

I'm installling MyBB 1.1.7, this is what appears when I'm trying to CHMOD it (uploads CHMOD's fine in the installation check but uploads/avatars doesn't )

Try chmod /uploads/avatars to 777, then /uploads/ to 777

Thanks I had this problem too, it's strange. But 777ing it worked fine.

Still, weird that it happens...
