Does assigning guest group to bots works in a manner of robots.txt ? or we need to still add it ?
no need to add the group for bots ! if you have robots.txt then that should be sufficient ..
If don't have robots.txt then? guest group will serve the purpose ?

basically robots.txt is not required at all if you do not want to control anything for bots !!
robots.txt tells the spiders which URLs they may index. The user group you assign bots to enforces forum permissions.

Yes, but I suggest you do use robots.txt, without it you will see many crawl errors in Webmaster Tools.
