I was reading up on some articles about social networks the other day, and i noticed some forums were in the category of social network. It seems to me that when a forum has a massive amount of user it borders on social network/forum. When you really look at it a forum can be called a social network. Wikipedia says certain features are present in a social network, such as profiles, instant messaging, and so on. All these features are part of a forum. Maybe only when a forum reaches a certain scale/size, people class it as a social network?Undecided
Well, HF is pretty big but I wouldn't classify it as a Social Network.

It only becomes a social network when you integrate other forms of media other than the typical message board.

Nah, apparently it's unreachable, at least for me, and I'm not in the mood to scan for proxies. Thanks for answering to my question.

However, forums and social networking have a similar mission: gather people around. The biggest difference is that the social networks don't necessarily need a topic or a collection of topics Toungue
Social Networks are used by hundreds of millions of people, to connect and stay updated with people you know. Forums are often used by smaller groups of people usually directed on a certain niche.

Two completely different concepts. Yes they're both based around socializing, but you wouldn't called rugby football just because they're sports.
Similarly, social networks are fro friends to socialise online, forums are for total strangers.

Most forums are used simply for text based discussion with images and videos added in. Social networks used text, videos and images AS their method of communication.
