I want to make another menu in the navigation bar for all the registered members, to put links like "Today's Posts, Private Messages, etc".

you can add a css menu or simple html links in header_welcomeblock_member template
(add code at the bottom in between <div id="newmenu"> and </div> AND use css adjustments if required)

It doesn't appear above the navigation menu, it appears where is the Login/Register for guests.

well, you have a different type of menu system where private messages link is visible to guests !! so if you want
adding a similar links system then you can add it before <div id="searchbar"> OR at the end of its content ...
