I have email activation as my default, but they are not being sent for new sign ups. I have to authenticate them manually and its a drag. Is there a reason for this? A bug perhaps?

Does it work with other mails like "Thread Subscriptions" ?

Run this test: [wiki]Mail Issues[/wiki] If it doesn't goes fine then you'll have to contact to your webhost.

which mail system you are using (php OR smtp) ? see [Wiki: Help:Mail] (Broken link, head over to docs.mybb.com instead) ; who is your webhost ?
what does system mail log say (admin panel --> tools & maintenance --> System Mail Log)
