I am really curious about this one too.. hope somebody can help!

Since the index page is built by iterating over the forums and categories, you can't get subforums and categories to search like you want. You would need a plugin and a template placeholder+template variable, not just a regular template variable by itself, that you would populate just before outputting the index page.

I can visualize it in my head so i think it is doable.
