not really possible since the word could be dumbstruck and the filter would catch that as well since there is an infinite combination of formatting

just add to your TOS that purposely avoiding the word filter is not allowed. then warn, ban, etc as needed

The MyBB word filter is not that strong but to make it better would require more trouble than it's worth.

I agree with Pavemen and Labrocca, actually an algorithm that deals with all the word filtered would be complex, it's just impossible to do that actually. It will need a word-by-word verification, "un-format the word, look if it should be filtered, if it is, return the replacement text, otherwise return the word"... It seems easy for a 10 word sentence, but for a million word text, it's just impossible...
