I have 1.6.5 and i have upgraded from 1.6.4 before but i can't remember how.. i have plugins so i think some of the original mybb files may have been edited by some plugins.. i dont know what to do, i dont want to ruin anything. I have backed up my files and database.

No, don't disable your plugins.
You will keep all your settings.
Plugins don't alter core files.
Just upload the changed files package and run the upgrade script.
May i ask, what is new in 1.6.6 apart from security improvements..
Also, i would like to know when a new major feature is going to be introduced.
The vanishing announcements bug is fixed in 1.6.6, other than that it's just a security update.
It's unlikely any major new features will be added before 2.0
