You need to do more than just activate it. Read the documentation that comes with the plugin.
I want the same thing. Will Google SEO do mysite.com/forums/category/topic? I have it set up and rewriting the URL but I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to make the tree like structure that the OP of this thread asked about.
Why can't it be implemented into the script? Like wordpress had for years for example... Strange.
What is the exact error you getting? You might be having problem in editing and placing out the codes in the right order.
