Because the author was kind enough to develop it in the first place. It's $10 for a lifetime membership.

There is another plugin that do the same (I think).
I don't know if it is free or paid: http://mybbsource.com/mods.php?act=view&id=173.

You also get a whole lot of other plugins too though so really it's worth the subscription.
