Is there a relatively simple way to remove these parts of the menu (search, member list, calendar, help)?

If not, perhaps they could be shifted to the left-hand side of the page (they're currently on the right).

simple method to remove items is delete related code in the template . you may also use html comment tags to ignore the required code
moving items from one side to another is also possible thru alignment code and css style properties ... can we have your forum URL ..
