i had the same issue (im running 1.6.4)
my host told me the file causing the problem was xmlhttp.php.
I looked it up using web server stats from within my hosts cpanel & that particular file is using VERY high ewsources:

hmm just loked into it further, it seems its my shoutbox causing the high usage :/
i am having all these from long time since then i had no issues,
now only doubt i have is tapatalk plugin, only this was installed recently so now checking with it.
Even after disabling the tapatalk plugin its the same, some thing is very wrong and i dont know what.
I have disabled almost 20 plugins (which were running from long time without any issue)
Generally the CPU usage is just around 0.1% but when ever i open around 6-8 threads on different tabs the CPU usage goes upto 5 -8 % before it was not like that.
My site continuously shut down for 2 days now by the hosting company (Hostgator)
So any help would be really appreciated.

Could you post a list of all the plugins currently in use? Have you disabled stuff like the navigation dropdown and forum jump menu?
Mention your plugins please...
And then, We can suggest you the next step
