Didn't find anything in the wiki on this, but do I have to remove the old plugin before updating or will the new plugin overwrite the old?

Depends mostly on the plugin. In 99% of cases you can just replace the old files with the new ones. Sometimes you need to de-activate then re-activate after have updated the files too.

All but three plugins updated successfully. The three that didn't seem to not work.

I did download the latest versions but I get error for Plugin Library saying a mysql error has occured and the forum is no longer available. The A2 plugin keeps telling me I've uploaded 1.1 when I have actually uploaded the latest version 1.2, and the profile fields on postbit simply will not work nat all although it tells me I have uploaded and activated it successfully. I realize that is a matter for the author but he has not replied to my query.
