Do I need more to use phpmail for sending activation mail?
PHP is not my thing, but I can tell you that Email activation method can be chosen from the AdminCP->Configuration->User Registration and Profile Options->Registration Method->Send Email Verification.
I have choose that configuration but no emailactivation is sending.

I just registered using the nick Usermybb and I got the Email. So, I'm not encountering your problem.
It's happening only to you, or it was reported by other users? Did you check your Spam/Bulk folder?
