Post icons should not be included in the default installation. Imho, they're a needless clutter to the design and a feature that isn't even used often enough to exist.
So my suggestion is for post icons to be available as a separate plugin. If not, at least have a global way of turning them off, not the current per forum option, mainly just to have their column removed from search results as well without any hacking.
