There's a reason for the term "out-of-pocket" expense. It means that you have to pay for something before you get the money for it from members. It's a good investment.
Also, the theme you're using is kind of weird. Besides that, get rid of the shout box and Twitter feeds.
A third thing, your forums are so scattered and varied, it seems rushed.
Great site, theme is great since it's an Apple related forum.
I would say to add descriptions to each of your sections and perhaps spread them out.
For example have a category for Apple and then subsections with tutorials, jailbreaks, and discussions. Don't let everyone discourage you, if you put time into it it can become great.
