I am working on a theme for a new forum which involves a large amount of template edits. Obviously one way of doing this would be by making all the edits through a plugin but this is rather time consuming and I don't know it I would be able to target all the elements I want to. It is possible to create custom templates for a theme to use, but what happens to these templates when the software updates? Would I still be able to use them after the update?

Thanks,
Yes you can just edit the theme's templates, and when a new MyBB update comes out they won't be affected since MyBB's updates doesn't target your themes (unless it's fixing a issue that's global, which it shouldn't have a huge or even a impact at all), so yes you'll be able to use the theme afterward and even if you wanted you can export it and save it in case you want to release it or move hosts or what not.
