It needs a plugin. There is no free plugin available though.

Add the following to .htaccess

Its right but probably redirect to the fid=2 even if the users are viewing the showthread pages ? I may be wrong since I don't know much about htaccess ruling though Toungue

It basically overrides index.php as being the index. It won't affect other pages.
