Try this at the top of .htaccess

Redirect /index.html http://vauxhallmodified.co.uk/portal.php
IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti*

That didn't work either :/ Any more ideas? I'd really like to have the portal as frontpage.

try the portal redirect plugin works for me
