Well after doing a little bit of searching I saw that there was a plugin to prevent special characters from being used in usernames, but is there no default setting you can switch on to do this? If so, I haven't been able to find it in the ACP but I'm pretty blind so if anyone has any advice, please let me know.

There is no default setting for this.

As Yaldaram said, there is unfortunately no setting for this by default.

Ah alright, thanks guys. One should definitely be added in the next version then.
