I can not figure it out how to update the version of php up to 5.3 for my MyBB forums.Can anyone tell me how to do this update? I am using MyBB 1.6.7 and the current php version is 5.2.17.

Updating the php is a server/host related problem. Are you on shared hosting, vps, or dedicated server?

If you have SSH access, install this repository: http://blog.famillecollet.com/pages/Config-en
Then it's as simple as "yum update php"

I share the server with someone else. If this is a server host problem, is MyBB compatible with the most recent PHP version or what versions is it compatible with?

MyBB is compatiable with all PHP 5 versions, including PHP 5.4.
