You can import, but as I have found out the template system is not as different as the upgrade would make you believe.
Some modifications with different template bits, and they added more theme options to make editing the default template easier and allow basic users to make things more customizable.
Themes that are based off of the main template should work without too much problem. However, I believe most of the problems lie in the template sets. Personally I have decided it would be better to just remake the template sets because of the new bits.
