Yes JSON is easier, at least to me. We need a new thread to get this started.
My suggestion off the top would be to limit inclusion of core files and mimic the minimum needed similar to xmlhttp.php

My thoughts exactly. I'm also thinking the API should require specific authentication via the ACP via secret key. That way it's secure and up to the forum owner who has access.
We do need a new thread though. Or a github repo for once we get some code (nudging you once again to join GH
)
