So if I understand this correctly, if I upgrade my forum to 1.2, I will lose my current existing theme? And cannot reinstall it?

So people who have a forum with 1,000 active users will just upgrade their software and lose their identity?
Yeah, you lose your theme, but it shouldn't be too hard to remake it.
Before I upgraded mine, I copied all my changes into notepad - then after the upgrade I just rechanged everything (making any needed adjustments to work with the new mybb coding)

You do not lose your user accounts nor posts. Only themes and custom modifications.
You can attempt to import your old theme after the upgrade. It'll contain some missing theme variables but they'll be inherited from the master theme. Some other parts may not work 100%.
However make sure you do not import the templates too.
Hmm... I'm scared to try. I'm just afraid that the theme will be all broken up.
