Ok, the files need to be thumbnail images loaded via the MyBB attachments system. This thread of mine here shows the expected behaviour:

Thanks again Leefish. Unfortunately, while the end result is exactly what I am looking for, the sequence (thumbnails) is not. What I was looking for was that result but from a link, not a thumbnail. Do you know if there is any other plugin or mod that can do this?
