I have put a private matters sub forum up for members to ask the staff questions and they can only see their own, but someone replied to someone elses that were not staff? Help please. ( I have it checked that only they can see their own threads. ) Should I also uncheck "Can View Threads Within Forum?"

Yes, Only thing you need checked is View forum and view own threads.
