your images directory is n0t well defined. check theme images folder as per your theme. or give me ur theme settings screen's screenshot.

AdminCP > Themes > Your theme > Edit > star_ratings.css > and see if the background property has correct image path, something like this;
.star_rating,
.star_rating li a:hover,
.star_rating .current_rating {
background: url(images/THEME_FOLDER/star_rating.gif) left -1000px repeat-x;
vertical-align: middle;
}

yaldaram u kn0w he's using default image set n0t the theme sets . i think his image directory is wrongly described

If his image directory is in wrong place then he would get complete mess of images across his forums. Its just star image which is missing.

Sorry to get nosy here, but what Yaldaram is saying is true. There were no [?] images or [x] images.
