Not that I want to cause MyBB to get feature-heavy, but think about adding this as a standard feature. I realize it's an existing plugin, but it takes a bit of editing to install it. http://mods.mybb.com/view/automatic-subscriptions

Who in there right mind would want to do that? In less it's a very small and private forum.

Yes, it would be for small or private forums so people can know when to show up.
